Puppy Diary Series: Week 9

Tuesday, October 13, 2020

When your little brother grabs your camera when you’re not looking but actually gets some nice shots. I don’t know where Dougie was for photo shoot time, probably on his lap!

Pups got to help us plant some mums today. They appreciated having the run of the yard while I was out there to keep an eye on them.

I woke up feeling terrible this morning and had to stay in bed for most of the day. I got up and fed the puppies of course, but after I crashed again they were wonderfully quiet and sweet. I pulled each of the puppies up in turn with me and they snuggled right in and made my sniffles and sore throat bearable. I’ll say this over and over again: my favorite thing about Havanese is how in-tune they are to how their people are feeling, and they can recognize and conform their behavior to suite what they think we need in the moment. They’re pretty stinking smart… just saying.

They still had a bucketful of energy though, so the kids raked up some leaves and played around with it and the puppies to get some of that mutual rambunctiousness out!

Up until this point the puppies have needed to go potty multiple times during the night. (Their little digestive tracks could only “hold it” for a few hours at a time.) Since I know that, I’ve been leaving their crate door open at night so they have access to the potty pad when they need it. It works for everyone because they do their business quietly in the dark and go back to bed without waking me up. 😉 Last night, however, I shut their door to start the crate training process… and sure enough, at one in the morning they howled to get out (nope, polite whimpering isn’t a thing when you’re dealing with a whole pack of puppies) and so nighttime training begins! In about a week they should get the picture…

Saturday (Shabbat) October 17, 2020

And I thought it would take a week. They made it through the night to 5:45 this morning! Only problem is that it was 5:45 on Shabbat morning and they were up for real at that point. 😉 But I was still proud of them.

Since we’re counting the days now, just a quick heads-up about puppy proofing. Any tiny nook, any tiny pencil, any tiny hole in a sock, any tucked charging cable, your puppy will find and explore. So start looking around for those tiny things they shouldn’t have, and if they’re home and go missing for a little while… look for them in those tiny places first.

Monday, October 19, 2020

Today was sweet. Everybody got baths again (is this going to be weekly thing now!?) and were champs about it. Then a dear couple interested in a future litter came over to talk and play with my dogs and the puppies before they go home.

Speaking of going home… less than a week until you’ll meet your babies! I have a vet visit scheduled for Thursday afternoon, so Lord willing we’ll have their health certificates ready on pickup day too. I’ve been working on their akc papers and some other goodies for you to take home also. By the time my next update comes out YOU will have your puppies!
